WHAT IS LEUCORRHOE?
Leucorrhea is the thick, whitish, yellowish, odorless vaginal discharge. Amount of discharge increase due to infection like bacteria, yeast and other organisms. Gonorrhea and chlamydia are major causes of leucorrhea.
Vaginal discharge is not always abnormal. Change in consistency of leucorrhea is normal during different phase of menses. It sometimes occurs before a girl has her first period and is consider as a sign of puberty. Increase in a leucorrhea during pregnancy is normal defensemechenism to prevent infection and provide lubrication to vagina.
Leucorrhea is the vaginal and cervical discharge that provide lubrication and wetness to the vagina.
CAUSES:
Common cause of leucorrhea is imbalance of estrogen, unprotected sexual contact, lack of nutrition, poor hygiene, urinary tract infection, other infection due to bacteria and fungus and candidiasis, irritation due to contraceptives that are inserted in to the vagina, diabetes and anemia are the other causes of leucorrhea.
TYPES OF LEUCORRHEA:
Physiological leucorrhea: It is not a major issue. It can be natural defense mechanism that the vagina use to maintain its chemical balance as well as to preserve the flexibility of the vaginal tissue.
Inflammatory leucorrhea: It may also result from inflammation or congestion of vaginal mucous. Ig discharge is yellowish and gives an odor a doctor should be consulted. It could be a sign of several disease process. After delivery leucorrhea present with backache and foul smelling it may be due to infection.
Parasitic leucorrhea: leucorrhea caused by trichomonas a group of parasitic protozoa specially trichomonasvaginalis. Common symptoms of parasitic infections are burning sensation, itching and frothy discharge, and thick white yellowish mucosa.
SIGN AND SYMPTOMS:
Fatigue, stomach cramps or pain, headache, constipation, pain in lumbar region and calf muscle, itching.
HOW TO PREVENT:
Maintain proper hygiene apart from that ensuring that you have a healthy nutrition rich diet must be taken to ensure there is no weakness of body or deficiency.
Sometimes spicy food increase the condition.
LABORATORY DIAGOSIS:
Discharge from vagina is taken to find out infection or parasite and culture of that discharge is done to diagnose the infection and pathology.
